Professional References Across Borders: How to Prepare Them
References can become more important when an employer is evaluating a candidate from another country. They help confirm reliability, duties, and communication style. Good references do not happen by accident; they need preparation.
Choose people who can verify behavior
A famous title matters less than specific knowledge. Choose someone who can describe your punctuality, work quality, teamwork, safety habits, customer service, or leadership.
Ask before listing anyone
Never surprise a reference. Ask whether they are comfortable being contacted, what contact method they prefer, and which roles you are applying for.
Brief them with context
Send your current CV, target role, employer type, and two or three achievements they may mention. This helps them answer confidently and consistently.
Prepare for language issues
If your reference is not comfortable in the employer’s language, explain this early. Written references or translated letters may help, depending on the employer.
Keep reference details private until needed
You do not need to publish reference phone numbers on every CV. Use “References available on request” or provide details when the process reaches that stage.
Next step: return to the article shelf, compare a country map, or use the Work Abroad Compass before applying internationally.
